THE EXPERIENCES
VILLAGE OF ROCCA RIPESENA
The village of Rocca Ripesena is also known as 'Little Orvieto' as it resembles the city so much and its tuffaceous rocks have the same volcanic origin. The large rocky wall can be visited on foot via a staircase that leads to an inspiring viewpoint where you can admire a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside and the city of Orvieto. Throughout the village there are various species of roses from all over the world that have led to this magical place being christened the 'village of roses'.
ORVIETO
Orvieto is one of the most beautiful villages in Umbria and the whole of Italy. The town's history and unique location make it an incredibly evocative place, something immediately clear from the visual impact of its position, almost suspended on a tuff cliff. Orvieto is a true treasure trove of riches such as:
ORVIETO CATHEDRAL
A symbol of the city of Orvieto, the cathedral is considered a jewel of the Romanesque-Gothic style, an extraordinary synthesis of architecture, sculpture, decorative arts and painting. Its magnificent facade, whose towers soar up to a height of around 53 metres, is famous all over the world. Thecathedral's interior is no less inspiring, filled with decorations and frescoes by some of the greatest painters.
POZZO DI SAN PATRIZIO
The Pozzo di San Patrizio (St Patrick's Well) is considered an authentic masterpiece of architecture and engineering, commissioned by Pope Clement VII to guarantee the city's water supply if it was besieged. Two spiral staircases are illuminated by 72 windows and superimposed so that two people – one going up, the other going down – can never cross each other, and allow access to pure water at a depth of 62 metres.
ORVIETO UNDERGROUND
Under the city there are several fascinating labyrinths of cellars and man-made corridors dating back to the Etruscan, medieval and Renaissance eras.
THE WINE CELLARS
Orvieto, a city of the finest wines, has a wide range of wine cellars where producers offer tastings as well as guided visits to the vineyards and cellars nestled in the fertile hills surrounding the cliff. Of the wineries close to us we highly recommend Cantine Neri, Argille, Azienda Agricola Palazzone, Altarocca and Castello di Corbara.
CIVITA DI BAGNOREGGIO
Christened the 'dying town' due to the constant erosion of its tuff rocks, Civita di Bagnoregio is considered one of the most beautiful towns in Italy: a magical, fantastic, surreal place situated atop a tuff hill and only reachable on foot via a breathtaking suspension bridge on the hills.
BOMARZO
The Park of the Monsters, commissioned by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, will plunge you into a fantastic world populated by mythical animals and gigantic monsters made of stone.
